I've been in Hueco Tanks now for 10 days… I gotta say it's a tough
place! You have to work very hard to succeed. Nothing will come easy!
There are risks too! People get hurt! The other day one girl was
climbing a roof, 4 feet of the ground and fell on her elbow beside
her crash pad. You know the crazy thing about it… It didn't stop her
from climbing! The next day she was back on the rock climbing again!
She is tough! That was her first day in hueco!
I cracked my finger open because of the dry skin. The first joint on
the index finger while crimping hard. It was painful at the beginning
but the next day with some tape it was fine.
I think people are prepared to work hard when they come here! You must
be otherwise it won't work! You have to work hard and to be careful at
the same time!
It ‘s been a slow start! I think that's good because I am here
for a long time (1 or 2 months). I feel like I am still warming up for
the days ahead. I don't climb more then 2 climbing days in a row and I
take lots of rest. For me that seems to work! I don't work something
for more than 2 hours a day and the only way I can do that is if I
really want to do that something.
Thursday the 7th I work on a stegasaur (v8) a roof boulder on slope
holds which requires lots of core tension. Your feet are hooking the
wall and you're trying everything you can to keep your feet on the
wall. Fortunately I did it fast and even got it on video.
Later that evening I tried Mc. Bain (v8)! I worked the sequence for 2
hours to finally find the right beta for me. By the end of the day
which was when it was dark and you couldn't see anything, I was too
tired to do it. I decide to return the next day to finish. Sent it 3rd
try with little difficulty!
Later on Friday I meet up with some of my Canadian friends (Sacha,
Margarite, Mike, Audrey, Ben and Claudi).
It was great every one was so happy and pleasant! I
I think the highlight of the day was seeing Mike send Luther v12. That
evening we all made plans to go to some caves the next day.
Saturday was a rest day spent at calrsbern caverns. I travelled with Mike
and Audrey. The Caves are 2 hours from Hueco, and they’re
amazing! I mean wow! The natural entrance is like an amphitheatre.
There is path so you can walk down inside. The main cave is about 750
feet below the surface. The walk down is about a mile and inside the
big cave the walk is 1.2 miles. The experience inside is wonderful!
Stalactites, Stalagmite, soda straws just to name a few. They’re all
beautiful. The different shapes, the coloring and the feelings you get
from looking in it makes you ache for more.
The experience ends with the elevator ride and the ranger inside of it
telling you everything about the elevator. Such as: it was
built in 1930 something The elevator travels more then 700 feet in 64
seconds. And then he turn off the light so we can look at the walls
outside the elevator. When you reach the top you will see some
doors like the one you saw at the bottom, When they open carefully
get out and go left. Elevator use for dummies! Right! He didn't
mention close you're eyes if you're scared!
That was Saturday!
Sunday 9h45 am, 10th February, I bumped into this guide who tells me
that he is conducting a volunteer tour to east mountain and there is
free spots. I asked “I would love to go! When are you leaving?” “in 5
minutes!” So I grabbed my stuff and went!
What a day it was! I worked 2 projects, flash a 7, sent a 8 and did the standing start of full
service.
Next up: REST DAY! (I hope!...Stay tuned)
