January 31st 2008 Destination: Hueco Tanks, Texas. USA. Just outside of El Paso, it’s easy to get to. On this trip I chose to travel by bus. I left my home town of Ottawa, Ontario, at 7am with my back pack and a bagged lunch from my mom. Ottawa/Toronto, 5hours…Toronto/Detroit another 5 hours. United States Customs. Here’s how that went down. It was the usual questions, Where you goin’?, How long are you stayn’? Show me your papers! Got a return ticket? How much cash are you carrying? “ I’mgoing to Texas for 2 weeks, here’s my passport. No I don’t have a return ticket but I have 600$ cash on me and the same in the bank and I’m unemployed. The officer asks, “ How do you support your self? and how are you coming back?” My response was “Saving and I’ll be catching a ride back with a friend, his names Mike Doyle” “How’s the weather down there?” he asked “GREAT” I replied and that was that. They scanned my bags, took the oranges from my lunch and I was back on the bus on my way to Hueco via Chicago (+5hours), Memphis (+10 hours), Dallas (+10 Hours) and finally El Paso (+10 hours). After a couple of local bus rides to the grocery store close to the park and a phone call to the rock ranch for a lift from a buddy. I made it! 1st day on. I warmed up in the new meadows, met some cool folks, did a lot of blahblahblah with a guy from Quebec. Once I was warmed up I got on Zuluflex (V6) then Babyface (V7), I managed to send them both after a few tries. Babyface is spectacular! Really nice movements and amazing finish! 3 out of 4 stars for sure. Day 2 For my part I love to see new area and try new boulders. I had been to west mountain on a previous trip and was exited and happy to meet my expectation. I warmed up on a steep wall with big holds. I tried an intermediate boulder but could not do it. So I tried a problem that uses the same start and move left at half way point. I worked the sequence and figure out the beta. I’m getting into the beat of the place again but after my success it was time to go back to the Hueco Rock Ranch and call it a day.
